Week 2

What is Literature Review

• Survey of literature from other sources that can help to address issues, ideas and theories relevant to our area of research

• Provides a critical evaluation as well as summary of the area of research

• Critically analyses information gathered, as well as identifying gaps in knowledge in order to point out areas where further research is required

Why do Literature Review?

• Assessment on the current state of research. Literature review allows us to know more about the topic as well as how extensively the area has been researched

• Identification of experts in the field of research. This allows us to identify the researchers that have had the most extensive experience in the field, and can be a key resource for reference and consultation.

• Identification of key questions about a topic. There may be research gaps that require further research

• Protection against plagiarism. A comprehensive analysis of literature review allows us to know what has already been done and published, which can help prevent accidental plagiarism.

What is a good literature Review?

1. The sources must be relevant and reliable

2. It must lay a strong foundation for your research topic

3. It should be narrow enough to eliminate irrelevant information

4. It should be wide enough to cover enough information required on the subject

5. It should strike a balance between sources supporting and opposing a particular aspect or argument.

In this week 2, we did our first practical, which is dismantling a coffee machine, observe and inspect the machine its function, uses and its principles.

Afterwards, we have to brew the coffee to experiment and collect data to find out the energy input and output required. Thus, we have to weigh, measure and collect data properly to ensure that our results are accurate and reliable. Lastly, we needed to calculated and tabulate our data to see if the energy input and output is balanced.

Overall, it was an eye opening experience as it broadens our perspective on how we can apply chemical engineering principles and how each component works by breaking it down and putting it back together.
